Cannabis in Canada

Cannabis Marketing Canada
Canada has allowed medical cannabis since 2001 via the MMPR (Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations) then the ACMPR (Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations), but the Cannabis Act officially legalized recreational adult-use cannabis effective October 17, 2018.

All ten provinces are framing their taxation and regulation architecture independently and the transition from medical to recreational is certainly fluid but far from seamless.  The uncanny comparisons between a country the size of Canada and a state the size of California with similar populations, legacy medical programs and notoriously developed black markets make watching their recreational programs evolve extremely satisfying.  One of the major sticking points will be on the provincial, territorial and county, city and township level, particularly with the restrictions on cannabis marketing as it a applies to minors.

Cannabis advertising in Canada has an extremely strict undercurrent and producers and dispensaries encounter challenges with packaging, logos, brand placement and geographic prohibition to name just a few.  Digital marketing involves age gate issues, thin markets for paid campaigns (PPC), and social media blackouts or random account suspensions.  Organic SEO is often the last bastion of brand visibility because a well-optimized website can often overcome some of these hurdles.
